How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need?
It’s one of the most common questions new learners ask — and it’s a fair one. After all, learning to drive is an investment of both time and money, and it’s natural to want some sense of the journey ahead.
The truth is, there’s no fixed number that suits everyone — but at Blackwood School of Motoring, we do things a little differently. John Blackwood follows the full DVSA syllabus with every pupil, aiming to cover the official material in 10 to 15 hours of tuition. With regular practice, most of our learners reach test standard in around 30 hours of formal lessons.
Compare that to the UK average of 45+ hours and you’ll see why structure, consistency and the right instructor can make a real difference.
It’s Not Just About the Hours — It’s About the Progress
Learning to drive isn’t just about ticking boxes — it’s about developing real skills. That’s why every lesson at Blackwood is tailored to your pace, your confidence, and your goals. The DVSA outlines three stages of development: basic control, driving with awareness, and independent driving. We’ll guide you through each one with clarity and care.
Practice Makes Permanent
The hours you spend with family or friends make a big difference too. It’s not about clocking up miles for the sake of it — it’s about practising the right things the right way. That’s why John gives clear guidance after each lesson, so your private practice works hand-in-hand with your tuition.
Thinking of Booking?
If you’re brand new, a taster lesson is a great place to start. If you’ve had previous lessons or some practice with family, an assessment drive helps John get a sense of your current level. And if you’re returning to driving after a break, a refresher lesson might be the perfect confidence boost.
We keep things straightforward, honest, and supportive — because driving is a life skill, not just a test.
