What to Expect on Your Very First Driving Lesson
At Blackwood School of Motoring, we know that stepping into the driver’s seat for the first time can feel like a big moment. Whether you’ve been waiting for the right time or have just returned from holidays and are ready to get started, your first driving lesson is all about building a calm, solid foundation for everything that comes next.
Here’s exactly what you can expect:
Before You Begin
Please make sure you bring your provisional driving licence with you — you’ll need this to legally drive with John, your instructor.
Starting in a Quiet Area
We always begin in a quiet location with plenty of space and minimal traffic. There’s no pressure to jump straight into complex manoeuvres. The first lesson is about getting comfortable and confident at your own pace.
The Cockpit Drill
John will guide you through the cockpit drill — learning how to set up your seat, mirrors, and controls so everything feels right. You’ll check your seatbelt, doors, and understand the basics of safe positioning.
Getting to Know the Car
You’ll be introduced to the car’s controls:
- Steering wheel
- Pedals (clutch, brake, accelerator)
- Gear stick and handbrake
- Indicators and dashboard lights
Everything is explained clearly and patiently, questions are always encouraged. There’s no such thing as a silly question here.
Moving Off and Stopping
Towards the end of the lesson, once you’re ready, you’ll learn how to move off from a stationary position and stop the car safely. Nothing rushed — just steady, confident steps.
The Focus Is Always on You
Your first driving lesson isn’t about racing through skills — it’s about feeling relaxed, asking questions, and beginning your journey with the right habits.
If you’re ready to get started, feel free to get in touch. Lessons are available across Saline, West Fife, and Clackmannanshire.
