DVSA to Add CPR Skills to the Driving Theory Test
The UK’s Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced that CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) skills will soon be part of the driving theory test.
This means that anyone sitting their theory will need to understand the basics of how to give CPR – a vital, life-saving skill that could make all the difference if you’re first on the scene at an accident.
Why CPR Matters for Drivers
Driving isn’t just about controlling a vehicle. It’s about being prepared for the unexpected and keeping yourself and others safe. In the rare but serious event of a road traffic accident, knowing what to do in the first few minutes can save a life.
What Will Be Included?
While the DVSA hasn’t released full details yet, questions are expected to cover:
- How to recognise when someone needs CPR
- The correct steps for chest compressions
- The role of rescue breaths
- How to use a defibrillator (AED) if available
These questions will form part of the multiple-choice section of the theory test, alongside the hazard perception element.
When Will This Change Happen?
The DVSA has not confirmed an exact start date yet, but learners should start familiarising themselves with CPR techniques now.

Our View
At Blackwood School of Motoring, we think this is a fantastic addition to the theory test. Driving is a life skill – and so is CPR. Combining the two means new drivers will be better prepared to keep themselves and others safe.
We’ll keep you updated as soon as the DVSA release the confirmed start date.
