Practical Test Preparation – Essentials for Parents
Booking early is not readiness
A practical test is booked early due to long national waiting times, often before a pupil has completed the full DVSA syllabus.
Availability determines success
Regular lessons and early test-route practice are essential. Limited availability in the weeks before a test significantly reduces readiness.
Routes must be practised in advance
Stirling and Dunfermline each have multiple test routes. These cannot be covered properly in the final weeks if preparation has not already begun.
Essentials to remember
A pupil is only test ready when they can drive consistently, independently, and without prompting across unfamiliar routes. School, sport, study leave, and other commitments are understandable, but they do not change DVSA test requirements. If preparation or availability is limited, adjusting the test plan early gives the best chance of success and avoids unnecessary stress and disappointment.
