At Blackwood School of Motoring, the aim isn’t just to help you pass your test. It’s to help you become a confident, capable driver for life.
John Blackwood (ADI) brings over 20 years of experience as a driving instructor, offering a calm, supportive learning environment where pupils develop real road skills, not just test routines. Based in Saline, lessons are taught with patience, structure, and a focus on the individual.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or returning after a break, lessons are thoughtfully paced to build skill and confidence from day one.
What You Can Expect
Lessons that connect
Each lesson builds on what you already understand, with new skills introduced as your driving develops.
Increasing independence
As your understanding and experience grow, John gradually reduces his support so that you take more responsibility for recognising situations and making your own decisions.
Clear progress
At the end of a lesson, you’ll review how things have gone with John and identify what you’ll be working on next.
Calm, individual teaching
Everyone learns differently. Lessons are planned around your progress, with time to understand what you’re doing and why.
Learning between lessons
Blackwood pupils have access to supporting resources developed from the same teaching material John uses.
Safe and professional
Lessons take place in a well-maintained VW Polo with dual controls and dash cam. The car is fully insured and regularly serviced. John is DBS and PVG checked.
Driving Lessons and Assessments
Regular weekly tuition is the normal arrangement for Blackwood learner pupils, allowing each lesson to build consistently on the last. Assessment drives are available for learners with previous experience, while refresher tuition is available for full licence holders.
Weekly Driving Lessons
Regular one to one tuition with John, with lessons normally taken weekly and progress built from one lesson to the next.
Assessment Drive
A one-off session for learners with previous experience, used to identify current strengths and plan next steps.
Refresher Lesson
For full licence holders who want to rebuild confidence, adjust to a new car, or return to driving after a break.

How We Teach
Lessons follow the DVSA learning framework, but skills aren’t treated as isolated subjects. New learning builds on what you already understand, with support gradually reduced as you become more confident and independent.
Learning also continues between lessons. John will point you towards relevant resources from the Blackwood pupil library to help you revisit what you’ve covered or become familiar with what comes next.
